Podcast Pt 2: Leisure Exploration & Creativity with Veterans

We are thankful for our troops and veterans and that they put their lives on the line to serve and protect our country, and often times suffering injuries in the process. Rusty Noesner is a US Navy Seal veteran who sustained multiple head injuries during his time in Afghanistan. According to Rusty, during time in combat, soldiers often see things in a sense of black and white (fight or flight mentality), and when returning to the “homefront”, need a creative way to return back to color and original thought process. Adapting back to civilian life can be very difficult, but a great first step is through art and self-expression. Many male veterans view art, painting, and photography as weak, but in reality, it can be difficult for many. Art in general is not easy, and veterans may go through drawbacks, self-doubt and pain, but the final product is so rewarding. Occupational therapists can help by providing many other mediums that can be used to initiate the creative process, such as woodworking, journaling, construction or engineering.
OT practitioners may be cautious when introducing art as a medium for self-expression and often find themselves tip-toeing around what to say and do with a veteran. A great tip to keep in mind is that veterans do not want to be seen as weak or pitied, and wish to be spoken to and treated like a normal human being. OT’s should not be shy or timid, but confident, in their suggestions. Reiterate that art and the creative process is masculine, and that there is a “homefront” side of them that takes care of their family. Stimulating the brain with artistic expression is important, but you also don’t want to forget the physical aspect. Balance is necessary in providing great quality care. Leisure participation has been shown to increase quality of life and improve self-esteem and emotional well-being. Rusty Noesner created War Paints, a non-profit organization that empowers veterans to be creative. His website, www.warpaints.org , is a marketplace for veterans and first responders to showcase and sell their products – and keep 100% of the profits.
