Pure Bliss

The term “blissful ordinariness” means to be happy even in the most ordinary day-to-day activities, routines and experiences without taking those things for granted, which is oh so relatable in the world today. During this time of social distancing, the “ordinary” has been taken away from us, and we are beginning to realize just how much happiness it brought us on a daily basis. We did not realize the joy that going to school or work, eating out at restaurants, watching sports, or even buying necessities at the grocery brought us until we could no longer participate in them. This is exactly how people receiving occupational therapy services feel in an event of injury or illness. Clients receiving occupational therapy typically struggle to independently engage in their everyday meaningful activities, and this is when occupational therapy practitioners swoop in to save the day.
As a future occupational therapist, it is imperative that we maintain a holistic, therapeutic relationship with our clients. Creating this strong base can serve as a catalyst for bringing back our client’s “blissful ordinariness.” Through our holistic approach, we look at meaningful occupations in all aspects of our client’s life, no matter how “ordinary” they may seem. Ordinary occupations are often the most important, but many do not realize that until after their abilities to participate in them are taken away. OT practitioners acknowledge the value and importance of those ordinary activities, and once our clients return back to them, they will too. Throughout this process, maintaining a therapeutic relationship with our client is necessary in order to serve them to the best of our ability.
